Limit the number of votes a person is able to give

That would be useful to make users focus on the ideas they like the most, thus helping us to have a more valid priority list.

We've added the option to limit user votes. By default users have unlimited votes, but you can set custom limits for how many times users can vote for ideas.

If an idea is marked as completed, declined or is deleted, votes are returned to the user that voted on it.

Thank you for your suggestion, Igor!

What do you think about the following:

  • Should we also limit agents/admins votes?
  • If you allow positive votes (e.g. +1 / -1), should we count negative votes in the same way?
  • Should this be done to Ideas only, or to Questions/Problems too?

I'm not exactly sure if agents should vote... This should be an internal decision in the end? But if they're acting as users, yes, they should have the same limits.

I also cannot think on a good reason for someone negative voting an idea. Is it a bad idea? If so, why? I'm not sure about the limits because of this.

Finally, maybe questions/problems should have a different limit, or no limit - a vote there would mean more people have the same issue and it should be answered soon, right? On the other hand, if you give people freedom to vote on ideas, that may dissolve the team priorities, as in "all those ideas are nice, let's vote on all of them!" instead of "those ones are better for me, so I'll give them more votes".

Thank you, Igor!

We want to be able to limit customer voting

  1. Agent votes not counted
  2. You should allow both
  3. All Ideas & Problems

Thank you for your feedback!

Sure!

Will this be added soon?

There hasn't been a decision on this one yet. When it is added to the roadmap you'll get an email telling that the status has been changed, e.g. to Planned or to In Progress (just check if you're following this topic).

Thank you Edward for this update!

1. Agents voting should not be possible, or configurable ('Agents can vote yes/no').
2. A negative vote should also count against your remaining votes.
3. Voting should only be possible for Ideas, not for problems or questions. I think if a problem or question is worth voting on, the issuer or an agent should transform it to an Idea first.

Thank you for your suggestions, Roelof!

When you sort questions or problems by "frequently asked" or "common" respectively, the ones with the most positive votes will come out on top. Would you rather use a different metric to sort popular questions / problems?

Vote Allocation Limits is a super valuable feature, since they help us prioritize bug fixes and features.

  • Negative votes should count against the allocation (since they are a way for a Customer to indicate an Idea they disagree with and thus could or should be a lower priority than Positively voted Ideas).
  • Negative voting should be an option, however; as some Communities would like to follow the moral: "There are no bad ideas".
  • Voting may be applicable to Problems (Bugs) as well, since some Bugs are more impactful than others (some bugs don't impact many Customers because they don't use the particular features affected by the Bug); thus Customers may vote on Ideas above Bugs (or vice versa).
  • It may make sense to create separate vote allocations for Ideas vs. Bugs, though the previous bullet implies that is not appropriate. Instead, the Community manager may make it clear that highly Voted bugs will tend to take priority over Ideas "in general".
  • Vote allocations could perhaps be separated by Category of Ideas (i.e., votes for one set of functions vs another set of functions; or votes for one version vs. the next version). Certain could get complicated, but worth thinking about the possible arrangements.
  • Certain groups of Customers (e.g., Elite or Premium Customers) could be allocated greater number of votes and/or higher vote weighting. (e.g., regular customers get 10 votes and can allocation 1 vote per Idea; premium get 30 and can allocate 1,2,3 votes to any Idea).

See UserVoice and UserEcho for examples of Vote management.

Thanks everyone for your feedback! We are already working on this feature. Here is the summary:

  • Set custom limits for how many times users can vote
  • The limit applies to ideas only
  • Only users are affected by the limit (not agents)
  • Negative votes count against remaining votes
  • If idea is marked as completed or declined or is deleted, votes are returned to user
