Can I import tickets from the API with a specific ticket ID from our old system?

We'd like to import ticket history from our old ticketing system,  the Api documentation says we are able to edit some more fields that we would be able to usually, but trying to import a ticket with an Id specified causes a 404.

Is there a way around this or do we need to use some kind of custom field to import this data :-(

Unfortunately, you can't specify ticket ID. You should use custom field for this purpose.
